DOES THE WORK CULTURE SUIT YOU?
Working culture has changed dramatically over the last generation but are some businesses being too slow to adapt?
According to a recent publication by Working Families, half of parents sampled in research are unhappy with their work and family balance, which is resulting in negative health effects and damage to family life.
While the majority of parents see the responsibility of improving work-life balance lies primarily with themselves, worrying, they believe the solution is to change to an employer offering better work life balance options.
With staff potentially leaving jobs but recruitment so tough in this county, surely this is needs to be addressed.
Are businesses responding fast enough to this? One company that thinks they are not is Base Connections in Woking.
Eleven years ago Annetta Snider and Julia Scott were looking to return to work after having had children. They wanted part-time work which was fun, stimulating, interesting and offered a challenge which could be done around their families. They couldn’t find it so set up a company from home making sales appointments for a client and called it Base Connections. Base Connections now employs around 55 staff on Genesis Business Park in Woking.
Understanding the need for work life balance so personally has meant that although the Company has grown, the commitment to this ideal has not wavered.
That doesn’t mean that it has always been easy, but challenges such as communication have been overcome by putting systems in place for instance using an intranet, team coffee breaks and newsletters. To even up the output of workflow, mature gap and university students return to Base Connections during the holidays when other staff work less.
Strangely enough, although people apply to advertisements saying that flexible working is offered, many are sceptical they are going to get this because of negative previous experiences when apply for jobs.
Some roles suit flexibility better than others and it does require some lateral thinking but there are rewards.
In an industry where a typical length of service is just a few months, the way Base Connections works has lead to 49% of the work force having been with the company for 3 years or more, 28 % for 5 years or more and 9% for 10 years! As they help companies generate new and keep existing customers, Base Connections own clients find this an important factor in their decision to use them.
With good business reasons to keep up with the needs of the workforce let’s hope companies can keep pace.
